The world of exercise is a fickle one - it seems that every month there's a new craze promising to make you the healthiest, fittest, most awesome version of yourself!
But if it was that easy we'd all be running around getting in phenomenal shape and feeling totally amazing, right?
Because of the wide range of activities we offer at Move, people often think we want people to be mixing it up all the time. However while we do advocate the importance to variety in your routine when you start to feel bored and demotivated, it's also critical to your success that you do exercise that works for you and is easy for you to turn into a sustainable habit.
Nine times out of ten, the workout that will be best for you won't have anything to do with how good the before and after results are or how many pounds it will help you lose, or how quickly it will get you a sculpted body - it's the one you enjoy and can stick to.
That's why it's so important to find a workout that you get that feel good factor from and you feel excited about - exercise shouldn’t be a chore! We're all different, so one thing that makes your best friend buzz won't necessarily do the same thing for you.
Here's 3 signs that your workout is the right one for you:
- Does it make you smile?
This might sound a little weird (we're not suggesting you bicep curl in the corner with a grin as big as a cheshire cat on your face), but it's so important that you're having fun when you exercise. Whether it's an inward smile as you fight the burn and feel awesome, a giggle during an energetic dance session or even just a smile of triumph after walking your tired legs into the sauna after a great weights session.
- Can you stick to it?
We don't want to scare anyone but we don't want to sugar-coat it either - sometimes committing to a fitness routine is hard. There might be times that you're going to need to get up early in order to fit it in, sometimes you're really not going to feel like doing it and sometimes you're going to have to dig deep and find your own motivation to drive you forward. If you dread every workout, or if you’ve started a routine which means you have to spend 5 hours in the gym a week when you really don’t have the time between work, family and general life, you're very unlikely to be able to stick it out. You need to find something that you can sustain in the long term - not just for 6 weeks.
Variety and having easy access to a few different convenient providers can be the secret here, so make sure you explore what is out there and have a couple of ‘back up’ activities you enjoy doing incase you miss your favorite class.
- Do you feel like you are getting better?
It’s human nature to want to get better at doing things - if you feel like you’re not improving or progressing it’s easy to want to throw in the towel and give up. It has been proven that progression is what spurs us to carry on and maintains our motivation (you can read more about this here).
So how do we apply this to exercise? Is the workout getting easier? Are you faster, fitter, stronger? Can you know do the ‘moves’ without cringing ;-D. It's important to make a check of markers like this every month to ensure the type of workout you’re doing is still working for you. It doesn't have to be physical changes - tracking how confident you feel and how much more energy you have are also effective ways to check your workout is right for you.
